CBC Engineers & Associates, Ltd. will continue to add to this library of project summaries as we encounter them moving forward. We are also looking through our archives to bring older but interesting projects back to life. As you scroll through this section you will find our diverse service offering. These case studies only represent a fraction of the number of projects that CBC is involved in on an annual basis but we feel they represent either a unique solution or a project of interest. Enjoy and return often to see what new postings might be here. Learning is an important part of Engineering and we believe in sharing our knowledge as we can not do all the work.

CBC goes DEEP for new Courtyard by Marriott @ The University of Dayton

CBC Engineers & Associates, Ltd. was involved in a major expansion of facilities at The University of Dayton in the mid 2000's. This expansion included a new baseball field, softball field and football practice field. It also included a Residence Hall, a Courtyard by Marriott and the expansion of The UD Arena where basketball is played. This case study will focus on the the Geotechnical Engineering provided by CBC to Concord Hospitality Enterprises Company who oversaw the building of the Courtyard by Marriott. Messer Construction was hired to build the facility. Deep Dynamic Compaction was the solution to improve the foundation for the new Hotel.

CBC Designs Additional Slurry Storage for Betsie Branch Impoundment in Bell County Kentucky

This Case Study presents the design of additional stages for Betsie Branch Refuse Disposal facility owned by Nally & Hamilton located in Bell County, Kentucky. The site can be found on the Balkan and Varilla, USGS quadrangle maps. It is at 36º 45' - 23.2" North latitude and 83º 33' - 11.6" West longitude. The additional stages for the structure are to be constructed of coarse refuse with a final crest elevation of 1455 feet, providing approximately 7,127,271 cubic yards of slurry disposal to an elevation of 1439 feet. At the time of design, the facility consists of an existing embankment that had been previously approved to a crest elevation of 1352 feet, with an approved fine coal refuse elevation of 1340 feet.

Woeber's Mustard - The Official Mustard of CBC Engineers & Associates, Ltd.

Woeber's Mustard, located in Springfield, Ohio, has been in business since 1905. It recently added a 64,000-square foot distribution center at the intersection of Urbana and Moorefield Roads. CBC Engineers and Associates, Ltd. was selected by the Woeber Family to conduct the Geotechnical Engineering Investigation for their new state of art manufacturing facility. The proposed site was vacant at the time of the Soil Borings and report findings. CBC took eight (8) soil borings and made recommendations on the soil strength for the design of the foundation of the new distribution facility.

Impoundment Design - Mingo County, West Virginia

The Delbarton Coal Company required an impoundment design that over its life would hold an estimated 23,359,541 Cubic Yards of Slurry. CBC Engineers & Associates, Ltd. submitted an impoundment design that would be built in 7 stages (including the starter dam) over the estimated impoundment life of 26 years. This design required staged construction to raise the impoundment some 460 vertical feet to meet the storage requirement. This impoundment continues to be built to this day.

CBC Visits Big Sky Country to Aid Montana DOT with Buried Flexible Bridge / Culvert Program

As part of Montana Department of Transportation's (MDOT's) comprehensive Culvert / Bridge Inspection Program, CBC Engineers & Associates, Ltd. was asked to to inspect, evaluate and provide remedial action in required for some 30 Buried Flexible Culvert / Bridge locations that have been on the MDOT's watch list for several years. CBC was originally engaged by MDOT in 2005 when measurements were sent to CBC for analysis. The DOT recognized CBC's ability with the recommendations and evaluation of the data given and decided to include CBC in a comprehensive Buried Flexible Culvert / Bridge Inspection Program starting in 2006. To date, CBC has observed, evaluated and in some cases designed remedial solutions at some 30 locations for MDOT and today only a handful remain on the DOT watch list.

Site Restoration - Ohio National Guard - Blue Ash, Ohio

It seemed like a normal removal & closure of a "Leachfield" and Septic Tank followed by a site restoration at the Air National Guard Station location in Blue Ash (Hamilton County), Ohio. This work was proposed to be performed by CBC Engineers & Associates, Ltd. in August of 2004. The work was to be performed in accordance with specified Ohio EPA, Ohio Health Department and Ohio Air National Guard requirements. All contaminated soil and Septic Tank system was to be removed and the site restored using imported quality soils to replace the poor soil hauled away. However, more was revealed when the contaminated soil was hauled away.

CBC Aids NYSDOT with Buried Flexible Bridge Evaluation Program

In late summer of 2009, CBC Engineers & Associates, Ltd. received a phone call from New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), Region 6. NYSDOT trying to be proactive in the requests of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), were in process of putting a culvert inspection program together similar to the already well established National Bridge Inspection System (NBIS). Although FHWA has not mandated this program yet, NYSDOT was preparing to launch their program. The call was to gather information to aid them in preparing their program.

CBC Aids The City of Huber Heights with an ASTM - Phase II Site Assessment

CBC Engineers & Associates, Ltd. was asked to assist the Huber Heights City Schools Board of Education with examining the construction site of their new Elementary School. The school location was to be on the former Standpipe Park Property in Huber Heights, Miami County, Ohio. During preliminary construction activities on the site, a landfill area was discovered that had not been known to the site design engineer or the city. CBC performed an ASTM - Phase II environmental assessment of the underlying soils and ground water to ensure there was no impact from the land fill.

Pittston Avenue Sink Hole and Stone Arch Collapse - Scranton, Pennsylvania

Stevenson Environmental Services hired CBC Engineers & Associates, Inc. to aid in the repair, replacement and restoration of this historic stone arch. CBC supplied a horse-shoe arch shaped structure to reline the remaining stone arch built in the early 1900's. CBC then matched this horse-shoe structure shape using Aluminum Structural Plate for the open cut areas in need of replacement. Once the entire length of the original 240 foot long stone arch was restored and replaced, CBC provided the design of the slope repair over the top on the new structures.

CBC Aids WVDEP with Fresh Water Reservoir - Chief Logan State Park

Authorization to proceed with the evaluation of the Chief Logan dam was given in a letter from Dr. Eli Laidley McCoy, Director, WV Division of Environmental Protection, dated January 29, 1997. At the time the Chief Logan embankment was zoned a dam consisting of a central clay core with upstream and downstream miscellaneous soil and rockfill shells. The crest elevation of the embankment is 886 feet, the overall height of the embankment is 58 feet from the upstream toe to the crest, and the normal pool elevation is 870 feet. The embankment was constructed during June, 1995, through December, 1995. CBC was hired to to find out why the dam was not holding water creating the desired fresh water reservoir.
